BBC News, The Independent

Pharmacy teams have faced major issues in recent days, with many patients booking COVID-19 vaccinations through the National Booking System (NBS) despite not being eligible this winter. Only those aged 75 and over, and younger patients with weakened immune systems, qualify for free boosters this year.

Alastair Buxton, Director of NHS Services, described the situation as “unacceptable” in an interview with BBC News. He also highlighted that pharmacy teams have been left to explain the changes in eligibility to patients – leading to reports of abuse directed at staff.

Commenting on the impact on pharmacies, Alastair Buxton said:

“That obviously takes a lot of explaining to patients. It causes upset, concern and maybe anger for some patients. We’ve certainly had examples of some patients becoming abusive with pharmacy team members.”
