Pharmacy owners can download a Prescription Item Report (PIR) each month via the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) Information Services Portal (ISP). These reports can help you to:
- view a breakdown of payments for individual products supplied each month
- reconcile your monthly payments against claims submitted for NHS prescriptions and for certain NHS services
- investigate any payment errors or discrepancies which may prompt a request for a prescription re-check, if required
- identify any staff training needs on dispensing processes to help reduce any endorsing and/or prescription claiming errors
The PIR provides a detailed item-level breakdown of payments for each product supplied against NHS prescriptions and for certain NHS services. The report provides a number of fields including:
- Prescription form and item number/identifier
- Product description
- Pack size and price used to determine reimbursement
- Quantity reimbursed
- Fees paid
- Dispenser endorsements applied (e.g. BB, OOP, SP)
- Charge status
- Prescriber code and partially-redacted NHS patient number
- Service type (for non-prescription supplies)
- Unique claim serial number – for prescriptions, this is the column heading for the Dispensed Item ID provided by your EPS IT supplier as part of your EPS claim messages sent to NHSBSA.
Important: Only the last 12 months of PIRs are stored on the NHSBSA server. Therefore, pharmacy owners should download these each month to maintain a complete record of their monthly payments.
The services currently included in the PIR are the Pharmacy First Clinical Pathways Service, the Hypertension Case-Finding service, including ABPM, and the Pharmacy Contraception Service, with claim-level information. These are shown as ‘B forms’ on the report. Line-level information on Influenza and Covid vaccinations are to be included within this report from the September 2025 dispensing month, with Emergency Contraception also being included from the start date of this service.
Community Pharmacy England supports further enhancement of the PIR, including the use of additional EPS identifiers, such as the EPS token reference number.
To access PIRs, you’ll need to register by downloading and completing the ‘Payment information registration form (for authorised users)’ available on the NHSBSA’s ‘Payment Information’ webpage. The completed form should then be emailed to: nhsbsa.cpspricinginformation@nhs.net
